Should You Take Out Domestic Nanny Insurance?

The short answer?

Yes!

If you're a self-employed nanny with an ABN number, nanny insurance is not actually a legal requirement.

However, having the right insurance could be the key to protecting yourself and your livelihood. So, although you might be paying monthly payments to your insurance company, it’s worth its weight in gold if something does occur.

Saving you from any expensive payouts.

Where Can You Go To Find a Domestic Nanny Insurance Plan?

If you work for a nanny agency, check and see what cover they provide.

Some agencies cover certain scenarios at work, meaning you just have to pay an excess fee should anything occur.

At Lisa’s Staffing Solutions, we’re personally insured with Nannrysure by Finsura and we also encourage all of our fabulous staff to head over to them and get their own insurance too.

They’re one of the select few nanny insurers in Australia.

So if that’s where you’re based, be sure to check them out and get a quote!

What Type of Cover Do They Provide?

  1. Public Liability Insurance:

Liability Insurance is there to cover your legal costs and expenses in the event of personal injury or third-party property damage.

For example, you’re cooking dinner for the kids…

They need your attention so you leave for a moment and return to find it in flames. The family's home insurer can claim against you for the damages.

  1. Professional Indemnity Insurance:

Professional Indemnity Insurance protects you by covering civil liability claims for compensation pursued by families who believe you’ve breached your professional duty.

For example, you make a mistake causing someone to suffer a financial loss.

  1. Personal Accident Insurance:

Personal accident and illness insurance protects you against loss of income resulting from an injury or sickness.

For example, you’re running errands for the family, and you trip over and break your leg, putting you out of work for two months.

Having this cover means you won’t be struggling to pay the bills because of your injury.

  1. Statutory Liability Insurance:

Statutory Liability Insurance protects you from penalties and fines for unintentional breaches of legislation.

For example, you’re nanny family claims you’ve breached a specific law and take you to court.

  1. General Property Insurance:

General Property Insurance provides cover for accidental damage, destruction, or loss to your personal work tools anywhere within Australia.

For example, your vacuum cleaner falls down the stairs while you’re cleaning a client's home, breaking to pieces, and damaging the stairs on the way.
